Celebrate Recovery

Cling to God

By Jeni Baker, Co-Global Executive Director

When I remember You on my bed, I meditate and thoughtfully focus on You in the night watches, For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings [where I am always protected] I sing for joy.  My soul [my life, my very self] clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63:6-8 (AMP)

When my kids were young, my middle daughter had a fear of loud noises. One day, when she was about 3 years old, I was bringing groceries in from the car, and she was trailing behind me. I set the bags on the ground and as soon as I opened the front door, the home phone was ringing. It caught my daughter off guard and terrified her. She proceeded to somehow climb up my body and cling to my neck with every ounce of strength she had. If she could have somehow burrowed into my skin, she would have. She clung to me because she was scared and knew I would protect and comfort her. I was her safe place.

This is the image I think about when I read Psalm 63:8 where David says his soul clings to God. When I think of the word cling, I think of hanging on for dear life. I think of desperation, fear, or distress. So many of us in recovery can relate to feeling fearful, desperate, or maybe even hopeless.

Whether you’re new to recovery or not, there may be times when it feels almost impossible, and you don’t know if you have the strength to carry on. Here’s the good news—with God all things are possible! It’s not your strength that needs to carry you through. It’s God’s, and He wants to help you. Principle 2 tells us that we matter to God and it’s through His power that we recover. So, when things are feeling scary, desperate, or overwhelming, I would encourage you to grab onto and cling to our Heavenly Father. He will uphold you with His right hand. He is our safe place. God will give you his strength to carry on and provide you with rest and protection in the shadow of His wings.
