Build a Bridge Between God’s Word and Issues of Our Day

By

The challenge of preaching is to declare eternal truth — what doesn’t change — in a culture that’s always changing.

The message never changes. It’s the “faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints”. (Jude v.3 NIV)

But the methods have to change with every generation. Otherwise, you’re not being faithful to the intent of the Bible.

Martin Luther said this: “If you preach the gospel in all aspects with the exception of the issues which deal specifically with your time, you are not preaching the gospel at all.”

One way to build a bridge between God’s Word and the issues of our day is to tie a sermon series into some cultural event, something that has already caught the attention of many people.

For instance, when we enter the current economic crisis, I preached a series on God’s principles for money management. It taught people that the Bible offers wise and practical advice on how to handle your finances.

Another example is when Mel Gibson released his movie, “The Passion of Christ”, we preached a series, “How Love Speaks: 7 Words From the Cross”.

A great opportunity next month will be to preach along with The Bible miniseries. Every Sunday night for five weeks — from March 3rd through Easter Sunday on March 31st — millions of viewers will see the Bible come to life in a whole new way.

You can make the most of this opportunity to reach out to the people in your community who will be watching the series but may not attend church — plan a sermon series, small group and outreach campaign and help viewers go deeper and learn even more about the Bible!

Every time I preach I know six realities about my audience. You can start with these six understandings.

  • Every person wants to be loved.
  • Everybody wants his or her life to count.
  • Life is empty without Christ.
  • Many people carry a load of guilt.
  • Many are consumed with bitterness from a past hurt.
  • There’s a universal fear of death.

Then you take it further by getting specific about the needs of your particular audience.

Do you have a citation in Luther for the quote by “Luther”, above? Because it sounds suspiciously like a dumbed-down version of this, which (so far as we know) comes from a 19th-century novel, not Luther: http://liberlocorumcommunium.blogspot.com/2008/07/luther-on-importance-of-jumping-in.html.

Does anyone know if the miniseries is still going to be shown in the Worship Center at the Saddleback Lake Forest campus immediately following the Sunday Night Services for the next five weeks?

Will “The Bible” series include a scene showing Numbers 31:17-18 which says Moses ordered the Israelite army regarding a recently defeated neighbor to “kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.”? I also wonder if it will have a scene of Matthew’s zombies at Matthew 27:51-53 which says that when Jesus died on Friday afternoon dead people in the local graveyards around Jerusalem came out of their graves and hung out in the graveyards until Sunday morning when the Bible says Jesus rose from the dead at which time the Bible says the dead walked into Jerusalem and “appeared unto many.” As the American founder and Deist Thomas Paine points out in his thought provoking landmark book on God, Deism and religion, The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition, the writer of Matthew did not say what eventually happened to these zombies. Did they meet-up with their spouses and families, did they die again, did they go back to their graves and cover themselves up again???? This is great material for the movie/series!

Bible stories like these which violate our God-given reason makes me realize we really do need a revolution in religion based on our innate God-given reason and Deism!

Bob, I’m not sure if the stories will be included or not. But those stories, along with all of the other hard to believe stories in the Bible are perfectly okay with me. I don’t have to be able to make sense of it in order to believe it. At the end of my human ability to reason, and well beyond the limits of Deism, lie truths that do not have to find proof in scientific reasoning. Besides, there are already plenty of zombie movies.
