When I was a young pastor (50 years ago) I got discouraged almost weekly, and I wanted to quit a lot. Then I found a poster that had a large cross on it. At the top it said, “I QUIT!” At the bottom of the cross it said, “I didn’t.” That cured me almost every time I looked at it.

I am a bi-vocational minister and I have to admit that discouragement is all over me! My wife and I planted our ministry in October of 2013 in a smaller town in Missouri! We have had lots of highs, but more lows! We have been very timely In with staying on top of everything, but seem to fail in so many areas! I have tried giveing opportunities for others to step up, and when they do they lose interest in and either vanis or stay with zero commitment to to serve in any capacity, only give when they can and my wife and I continue paying the bills for the church as well as our home! I have preached on giving, I have spoke about a servants heart, but most of all I continue to hear God say; your mission has not changed! After reading this I have realized that I have allowed myself to be discouraged, however, I’m losing sight on how to keep the new growth, as what would be considered as our core, don’t portray as a faithful servant in their relationship with Christ or for that matter, with others in the church! I have so wanted to say from the pulpit, this is our last Sunday; JoAnna and I will continue our ministry from the house!

Is there any encouragement you can pass my way!

  13. Really excellent … wish I were there now! We also need family … lots of good saved christians who will help carry the burdens and lots of prayers from concerned caring church people! Nothing moves the discouragement faster than that breath of fresh light and strength!!! So keep praying, folks!

Amazing article! More grace and wisdom Sir. I think additional cure #5 could be: ‘Remain Optimistic’. When we are optimistic and expectant of the good things God has promised us in His Word it will be difficult to be discouraged. This is because we know that the LORD will perfect that which concerns us – Psalm 138:8 and the expectation of the righteous shall result in joy – Proverbs 10:28
