Why Churches Should Consider Using Square

By

When it comes to giving at church, I am one of those people that do not like carrying cash or writing checks. I cannot tell you how many times I have walked out of the house and arrived at church only to realize that I either left the check at home or did not write it out at all. Besides that, we are so in a rush Sunday morning that I do not know who really has time to go to the ATM machine to withdraw cash for the offering anyway.

So, I find myself at church with no cash and no checks but I do have my card. However, the last time I checked, most churches did not have offering plates with a card reader on the side. I want to give but I am unable because I have a card and my church does not accept card transactions.

Until now. Meet Square.

This is what is awesome about Square. The app is free for both Android and iPhones. The card reader is also free. There is no upfront cost at all.

When you get your card reader, you can easily link the Square app to your bank account. It is quick. It does not even take five minutes. Square will ask you to verify your account which will take a couple days. After that, you are ready to use Square.

The card reader plugs directly into your headphone jack. Once the app recognizes that the card reader is ready to be used, it will let you know when you can swipe a card. The person giving the money swipes the card and types in the amount that they would like to give. Once that has been done, they will sign on the signature line with their finger. Square asks the person if they would like to have the receipt delivered to them by text message or email. Once selected, Square remembers what that person chose so that the next time they give, Square automatically sends them the receipt.

Since FaithPoint Community Church has began to use Square, we have noticed an increase in giving especially among college age students. I highly recommend Square for any church.

Once you make a transaction using Square, Square takes out their fee and then deposits the rest of the money into your account. The deposit is made into your account usually in less than 24 hours. Fantastic. That is far less time than it takes for a check to clear.

I can only speak from experience. It is a great tool for people that want to give that do not carry cash or checks. I encourage you to try it. If you are unsatisfied, you can always cancel. However, once you use it, you will be happy with making that decision.
